A Legacy of Passion

Canard-Duchêne’s passion stems from a unique blend of family values and an identity deeply rooted in the Champagne region.

Victor & Léonie

It all started with the love of Victor Canard and Léonie Duchêne. In 1868, they created the eponymous Maison Canard-Duchêne, driven by a bold vision : to reveal the exceptional potential of their hillside village, located in the heart of the Montagne de Reims.

The history of the house

Key dates in the history of Canard-Duchêne...

In 1859, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims in Ludes, the romance between Victor Canard, a barrel-maker, and Léonie Duchêne, a grower's daughter, blossomed.

Victor and Léonie brought their names and savoir-faire together to create the Maison Canard-Duchêne.

Popular with Tsar Nicolas II and the Imperial Court of Russia, Canard-Duchêne was granted the privilege of displaying the Russian coat of arms.

The two World Wars took their toll on the chateau that existed in the heart of the domaine leaving only its limestone cellars intact which are still in use today.

The Maison celebrated its centennial with the creation of a special cuvée named after the famous king of France, Charles VII. Its uniquely shaped bottle contains a refined blend, both an illustration of savoir-faire and a celebration of the best parcels of vineyards.

Canard Duchêne celebrates its 150th anniversary, an occasion to honor past generations who have contributed over a lifetime to the reputation and prestige of the house around the world.

An Exceptional Terroir

The Canard-Duchêne domain is in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, surrounded by celebrated vineyards and stunning landscapes.

The Montagne de Reims

Ludes boasts an exceptional location. Perched atop the famed Montagne de Reims plateau, the village is nestled amongst lush forests and delicate hillside vines.

An Emblematic Grape Variety

A true piece of Canard-Duchêne’s oenological heritage, Pinot Noir draws its character from the nutrient-rich soil of the Montagne de Reims, the product of 70 million years of evolution and unique combination of limestone, chalk, clay and sands.

The Canard-Duchêne Style

Canard-Duchêne has the noble varietal of the Pinot Noir grape which creates the signature of the house wine style.

Pinot noir

Canard-Duchêne’s unique identity stems from the character and elegance of Pinot Noir: it brings structure to the wine, enhancing fruity notes of cherry, sour cherry, blackberry, redcurrant, strawberry, and raspberry. Despite its intense purple skin, Pinot Noir produces a clear must, creating a clear juice from the freshly pressed grapes containing seeds, skins, and solid matter.

The Cellar Master

A real craftsman, Laurent Fédou is driven by instinct and curiosity. He uses those characteristics as his inspiration for rethinking the art of champagne making without neglecting tradition. For the last 15 years, Fédou has brought a sense of joy and creativity to the Maison Canard-Duchêne.
